Problem with Internet Explorer

Hi everyone,

I'm running Windows XP and IE8 on my desktop . A few days ago, IE started giving me error messages such as "A problem with this web page caused Internet Explorer to close" and "Internet Explorer has stopped trying to recover this web page". I don't believe the problem is the web page because I have the same home page on my laptop and I've not been having this problem there. It takes about five tries each time to get IE to actually connect to a page. I thought perhaps I needed to upgrade IE, but I don't want to do that unless I have to. I don't even know if IE9 will run on XP. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Becky

Reset it. That will clear it and then see what you have.
Go to tools, internet options advanced by shift tabbing to it than tab down and reset it. This is quickly off the top of my head, but you'll understand once you start.

also, it should be pointed out that any version of IE past 8 wont work with XP. At least MS doesnt support it.
IF clearing your cash doesn't work, let us know and we'll go from there.

not to burst anyone's bubble but if you use google's services, I think at the end of this year its time to find a alturnitive browser because google is going to block IE8.

Sounds like potential malware. Another option one can try is running IE without add ons. start menu all programs, accessories, system tools, internet explorer no add ons. Give that a try.

Google wants you to use Chrome. Lol

Well, now that I've actually had time to examine this issue, it looks like resetting it fixed the problem. And I didn't even have to reinstall my customized toolbar. It even kept me logged into Amazon. Strange, because as I was going through the reset process, I got a message saying that everything in IE would be reset. Ah well, at least the problem is fixed.

That really blows about Google and IE8. Looks like I'll either be switching search engines or learning how to use Chrome or Safari.

Thanks for all the info!

Becky

Oh man, that's a drag about google and IE 8. I have IE 9 on my Windows 7 desktop but often surf from my netbook with XP and IE8 from the comfort of my recliner downstairs. lol
I saw something about a new search engine that is supposed to be more private anyway so I guess I'll go try to track that down.

So let me see if I understand this Wayne.
Are you saying that if i were to go to google.com say after Dec31 2012 it wont work?

That's so stupid! Why should it matter what browser you use? I mean, I could understand some older ones not working, just due to graphics and whatnot, but why should it be a roblem on a site like Google? I'm not saying the information here is false, but can't understand why Google would do a thing like that. Anyway, I use Firefox with XP and NVDA and it's great most of the time.

So I'm assuming I would no longer be able to use Gmail with IE 8? Well, that wouldn't be too big of a deal. I can either switch to Firefox or use Thunderbird. My only problem is that if Google is doing this, I'm sure other websites will jump on that bandwagon faster than you can say turtle soup. Ah well, looks like I'll be switching completely to Firefox when that happens, cause I really can't stand IE 9.

see I'm confused. what part wont work on IE8. Is it just say if you sign into and use google's services? or are you talking about even the basic search page?

Post 16 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 09-Oct-2012 0:37:43

Google won't display correctly correct. Other pages or sites that don't program IE 8 out will still work just fine. It is like using IE 7. You just don't see some stuff on the page is all.
As posted this is easy. Use Chrome, or Firefox and enjoy the IE 8 on whatever it works on.
You can't fault Google for ditching IE 8 when they are offering you there product and it works fine and is up to date right? Why support older stuff?

Okay so it was recommended that I switch to safari and use NVDA. I currently use window eyes and am trying to decide if it's even worth upating, or if wineyes and safari is a lost cause. Does anyone have any recommendations about what screenreader to use with safari, or if a different set-up would be better? I have windows xp.

Post 21 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Tuesday, 01-Jan-2013 21:05:24

I don't see any problems with IE9. have any of you tried that?

Post 22 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 01-Jan-2013 22:30:42

IE 9 and the latest firefox are pretty stable. Upgrade the fox and see what you have.

Post 23 by forereel (Just posting.) on Tuesday, 01-Jan-2013 22:36:20

Also is IE 9 now working with XP? I didn't think it was available. It was not a bit back, so has Microsoft changed this?
I'll take a look at that, because if so in the future that would help XP users greatly stay with it when Google stops supporting IE 8.

Post 24 by JH_Radio (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Tuesday, 01-Jan-2013 23:06:41

IE 9 does not work with XP. The latest version that will run under XP is version 8.

I've actually changed my mind about IE 9. I still prefer Firefox, but IE isn't as bad as I initially thought. I hated it because the downloads window was completely different, and is sometimes difficult to get to, so I just use Firefox for my downloads, and IE for problematic sites like youtube where a lot of flash content tends to make Firefox crap out.
Speaking of which, for the person who was asking about that, while it's not a foolproof solution, what you can do is disable all your flash plugins that you have installed in Firefox. You can go into your add-ons manager, go down to the plugins you don't want, hit your applications key, and go down to disable. I got rid of Shockwave and Quicktime this way, and while it does mean you'll have to find an alternative way to watch videos and stuff, I'd rather deal with that than a browser that freezes, crashes or renders my computer useless until I can kill it in task manager.
